About
After graduating in Physics from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest in 1994, Gabriel Stoicea joined IFIN-HH. The following year, he began working with the FOPI experiment at GSI Darmstadt, studying heavy-ion collisions at intermediate and relativistic energies.
In 1995, he earned the equivalent of a Master's degree in Nuclear and Particle Physics from the University of Bucharest. In 2003, he received his Ph.D. from the same institution for research conducted within FOPI on the collective expansion of hot, compressed nuclear matter produced in central and mid-central heavy-ion collisions. He subsequently joined the CBM experiment at FAIR/GSI Darmstadt and ALICE at CERN's Large Hadron Collider.
In 2006, he joined the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, contributing to physics simulations and Grid computing. From 2007 to 2008, he worked at CERN as a Project Associate in the Grid Deployment Group. He then returned to IFIN-HH and the Romanian ATLAS team, becoming Romania's representative on the ATLAS International Computing Board. He also joined the H1 experiment at HERA/DESY Hamburg, where he contributed to studies of excited quarks.
Since 2008, he has contributed to high-energy physics schools, conferences, and Romanian ATLAS outreach activities. In 2012, he became Romania's representative in the International Particle Physics Outreach Group. He is a Principal Investigator and leads the Elementary Particles Physics Department at IFIN-HH.
Current work
- Leadership of the Elementary Particles Physics Department and coordination of its experimental particle-physics programme.
- Development of computing infrastructure for high-energy physics, including Romania's contribution to the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid.
- Representation of Romania and IFIN-HH in the restricted and plenary European Committee for Future Accelerators.
- Service on the IFIN-HH Scientific Council and leadership of its Ethics and Professional Conduct Commission.
